In London’s novel The Sea Wolf, the predominant symbol is “wolf.” The novel’s second main character Captain Larsen is always being referred to as “Wolf Larsen,” the “Sea Wolf,” and is just called a “Wolf.” The word “Wolf,” literally means a carnivorous mammal that hunts and prays on livestock. However, the connotation associated with the word “wolf,” makes people think of a wolf as a powerful, and cruel hunter that preys on animals weaker than it. Captain Larsen meets these standards, which is why he is referred to as a “wolf.” Larsen is a man who has strength that is almost superhuman. He is also a very intelligent man and is referred to as a genius throughout the novel. With Larsen’s superiority over the rest of his crew and also the rest of basically the human race, Larsen preys on those who are weaker than him, either mentally or physically, usually his uses his physical superiority to overcome his foes.
