During the Mexican War he worked as an engineer under Winfield Scott (“Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard, CSA.”) and was involved in siege operations at Vera Cruz, Cerro Gordo, Contreras, Chapultepec, and Mexico City, where he was twice wounded (Meehan) and received two brevets for gallantry (Tusa).
