Jackie was very well educated. She attended several private American schools. She was a well-rounded polished student (Onassis 66). In 1947, at the age of just 17 Jackie received a major honor. Igor Cassine, a Hearst gossip columnist named Jackie, “Debutante of the Year” (www.isdesigners).
Jackie continued her education up to college. Jackie studied at Vassar College during her freshman and sophomore year. For her junior year Jackie moved to Paris to attend Sorbonne. Then for her year as a successful senior she came back to the United States to attend Georgetown Washington University. She would graduate there with a major in French Literature (www.isdesigner).
Jackie entered a Vogue writing contest in 1951, just after graduating from Georgetown. More than one thousand people joined Jackie in entering the contest. The grand prize was to work for Vogue’s Paris edition. To her own surprise, Jackie’s paper on “ People I wish I had known” won the grand prize. However Jackie turned down the Paris offer. Instead she opted for a job at the Washington Times-Herald as a reporter-photographer (Onassis 66). Jackie’s position was formally held by Kathleen Kennedy (www.isdesigners).
Jackie first met John F. Kennedy, also known as Jack, at a party in May of 1951. Nothing came of their first encounter. They wouldn’t meet again until a party thrown by mutual friends (www.thekennedy2). Only seven months after meeting Jack, in December 1951 Jackie became engaged. Mr. John Husted asked for her hand in marriage. Luckily, Jackie broke the engagement off in March of 1952, just four months after Husted had asked for her hand in marriage.
