The respiratory system in insects can be highly affected by the animals surrounding environment. Many times the cricket must adapt to this environment in order to survive. This can effect respiration greatly. A crickets call song can be influenced by an increased respiration rate, as can fighting other crickets and predators. Both call songs and fighting are costly to the animal, “ Flow-through respirometry revealed that…males can expend relatively high rates of energy while fighting,” “while acoustic signaling was also costly,” (Hack 1997). When fending off predators, it is imperative that the animal has an outstanding endurance. Fighting with an opponent is the most costly tactic, causing the animal to consume oxygen at a net rate more than forty times great than that at resting (Hack 1997). The amount of oxygen used is heavily impacted by activity. Another heavy impact can also be temperature.
