Cats and Ferrets as Domestic Pets
From the worshipped cats of Egypt to the working ferrets of Eastern Europe and
the Middle East, these animals are two of human kind’s favorite pets, and have been for
most of history. Both sleep most of the day, and both are mousers, when allowed to do so,
making them less of a responsibility than other pets, while earning their keep. The
domesticated ferret and the domesticated cat have many suitable qualities for being house
pets.
Ferrets and cats are both great pets when it comes to playfulness and excitability.
A ferret is very playful by nature, and unlike cats, who are only truly playful as kittens, a
ferret retains this playfulness its entire life, like having a kitten forever. Cats are,
however, more loving and do make a more devoted pet. Like cats, ferrets will play with a
multitude a toys including strings and bugs, but are happier hiding treasures, which a cat
will not do. Ferrets enjoy hiding many things from soda cans to socks and have specific
places they will take their treasures to hide. Also like a cat, a ferret can become easily
excited, but their actions will differ. While a cat who is excited will most likely wave its
tail about and pounce or arch its back while puffing the tail to make itself appear bigger, a
ferret will spring around provoking more excitement in a kind of war dance, bearing its
teeth and flopping about. During this ecstatic parade, the ferret will make hissing sounds
like a cat but will also make a “dook” sound, but unlike a cat, a ferret will not meow,
making them a more silent companion. The ferret will also bush out its tail, in a way
similar to that of the excited cat, but the ferret tail more resembles a bottle brush. Even
though cats are enjoyable pets, the ferret makes for the more entertaining of the two.
