WOMEN’S RIGHTS REGARDING RAPE
All women should have the right not to be raped. I
strongly feel that the act of rape is violating the human
rights of women for three reasons. First, besides being a
traumatic experience, rape can result in an unwanted
pregnancy. Second, many rape victims also have to deal with
exposure to a variety of sexually transmitted diseases.
Third, I feel that all women should have the same right as
men to protect their bodies from the act of rape.
Unwanted Pregnancies
Although the act of rape can produce several outcomes,
I think that one of the most important is unwanted
pregnancies. Not only are the women exposed to the
traumatic experience of being raped but some also have to
carry it with them for at least nine months. Furthermore, a
woman who makes the decision to keep the child will have a
daily reminder of being forced to do something that she
didn’t want to do. In the book Human Rights, Hillary Rodham
Clinton states “It is a violation of human rights when
individual women are raped and when thousands of women are
subjected to rape...” (49). I strongly agree that rape is a
human rights violation. Although I feel that rape is a
violation of a woman’s human rights, it is an extremely
affective way to control women.
Sexually Transmitted Diseases
Many rape victims also have to deal with exposure to
sexually transmitted diseases. I feel that enough women are
exposed to sexually transmitted diseases without being
forced to participate in sexual acts. Sexually transmitted
diseases can be classified into three categories: those that
can be treated, those that are not curable but can be
treated, and those that are life threatening. An example of
a sexually transmitted disease that can be treated is
