d not worthy of mention. After researching this topic I have found that New Jersey parallels the Border States in various ways, and that there are sufficient differences between New Jersey and other Union states.
In examining whether or not New Jersey was a Border State, one must first consider the states location. New Jersey is located just across the Delaware River from the state of Delaware, which is widely known as one of the Border States. Second, the most southern point in New Jersey, Cape May, is located sixty miles south of the Mason-Dixon Line which divides Northern States from Southern States at the Delaware-Maryland state line. Not surprisingly, Cape May showed significant sentiment to the South during this time (I will discuss Cape May further later in this paper).
