lthough he held in opposition to slavery, his proposals to abolish it within the state of Virginia failed. He was described as an especially kind man to his slaves.
Jefferson was not one to be in the public eye, although because of his position as a leading planter, Jefferson was expected to take part in the colonial government, and with that notion he was elected into the Virginia House of Burgesses and the Continental Congress, he contributed his pen rather than his voice to the patriot cause. As the "silent member" of the Congress, Jefferson, at 33, drafted the Declaration of Independence. In years following he labored to make its words a reality in Virginia. Most notably, he wrote a bill establishing religious freedom, enacted in 1786.
Jefferson made this statement, “I was the pen of the American Revolution, as George Washington was the sword.” It could be that if the conflict between Britain and the American colonies would not have arose, that Jefferson would have remained at this quiet home in Virginia. Jefferson was a great asset to our country and a true patriot, yet I would like to focus on the life that he lived at his house on the hill, in which he designed and built, called “Monticello”, meaning “little mountain” in Italian.
When Jefferson married, Martha Wayles Skelton, she was already a widow, a mother, and heiress. She was said to be a beautiful woman, slender, with hazel eyes, auburn hair and was wooed by many. It was stated that this romance, came about from a love of music. Jefferson love to play the violin, and one of the furnishings in which was built within Monticello, was a “forte-piano” for his new bride.
